Back in the day (the 1970s and 1980s) there were printed magazines for people working in IT. (The one whose name I remember was Datamation.) I recall an article that reported the results of polling IT workers and IT managers as to what they wanted out of their jobs.
The article listed the top 10 things for each of the two groups. There was almost no overlap in the two lists. Workers wanted things like interesting work, the opportunity to work with new technologies, the opportunity to expand their technical knowledge, and work/life balance. The managers wanted more responsibility, more people to manage, bigger budgets, more exposure to upper management, and rapid promotion.
The difference in mindset is nothing new.
