I think much of the right's attempts to determine what appears in public school history books in particular is actually ineffective. Most (all?) middle school and high school history books are so dry and boring that none of the students remember anything in them.

Ask any average 25 year old when and what the gilded age was. Ask them what the gold standard was, who favored it, who opposed it, and why. Ask them how the number of deaths in the 1918 flu pandemic compared to the number of deaths in WWI. Ask them who were the allies were in WWII and which of them suffered the highest casualties. You will mostly get blank stares or wrong answers.
