What Were They Thinking?

Now that I’ve calmed down a little bit from the anger I’ve been feeling following Wednesday’s events in DC, some questions come to mind. I’d really like to know the answers.

What exactly did the people who invaded the Capitol building think was going to happen as a result of their invasion? Was this somehow going to result in overturning the presidential election? How did they think that would occur? Or was this just about expressing rage and getting selfies to post on Facebook? Did they think there would be no consequences for themselves for what they did? Did they think the majority of people in the country would support these actions? Or did they not think much at all about what they were doing and what the results would be?

What exactly did Donald Trump think was going to happen as a result of this? Did he think that somehow this would cause the Democrats in the House of Representatives to strike down Biden’s win? Did he think a huge number of citizens would rise up to install him as the US dictator? Did he see this as another boost for his ego like his rallies are? Or did he have no idea what was going to happen, what it would accomplish, and how it would reflect on him?

My impression is that neither Trump nor the people who invaded the Capitol thought ahead very far. I’d like to know if that is correct or not.
